The Buffalo Bills secured a 28-21 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs in Orchard Park, improving their season record to 6-2 and maintaining a strong home performance at 4-1. The game was marked by Buffalo’s control of the line of scrimmage and effective management of the clock and score.
Throughout the night, the Bills emphasized their established style of play, focusing on a powerful running game and defensive takeaways. Quarterback Josh Allen commented on this approach: “We feel like this is more of who we are.” Allen contributed nearly 300 total yards and three touchdowns.
Buffalo took an early lead, scoring on their first possession. By halftime, they held a 21-13 advantage with an average of 7.5 yards per play and a high offensive success rate. Allen credited offensive coordinator Joe Brady for effective play scripting: “I think Joe did a good job of scripting some stuff early on.”
Despite needing a late defensive stand—a knockdown by safety Jordan Hancock as time expired—the Bills executed their plan in key moments. Head coach Sean McDermott said, “The journey of a game, kind of like the journey of a season. And I think we learned a little bit about ourselves today,” adding that he saw his team unite under pressure.
Buffalo’s defense limited Kansas City’s offense, which had averaged nearly 30 points during its previous three games. They held quarterback Patrick Mahomes to his lowest career completion percentage (44%) and restricted the Chiefs to their fewest points since Week 3. Defensive end Joey Bosa reflected on overcoming adversity after recent losses: “You learn from adversity… Losing sucks and it’s a long season. We got a week off, and we just kind of walked in and came back to work. And here we are, two wins in a row.”
Bosa registered his fourth sack this season and led an aggressive pass rush that resulted in 14 quarterback hits—Buffalo’s highest against Mahomes since he entered the league—and pressured him on over half his dropbacks according to Next Gen Stats. Defensive end A.J. Epenesa noted their disciplined approach: “We did a good job of just being disciplined. Making him think he had openings, and then taking them away.”
When pressured, Mahomes completed only three passes out of sixteen attempts for one interception.
Running back James Cook III made history as the first player in over two years to rush for more than 100 yards against Kansas City’s defense during regular season play; he finished with 114 yards on 27 carries—his fifth such performance this year—and became only the second Bill ever with at least 330 rushing yards across two games.
Allen praised Cook’s impact: “We got a 100-yard rusher against the Chiefs, which does not happen too often at all… The way that James ran the ball tonight was awesome.” Cook’s success created opportunities for explosive passing plays; Allen connected for gains over 25 yards three times—the most since Week 1—including touchdowns to tight ends Dalton Kincaid (23-yard) and big plays by Dawson Knox (30-yard).
Allen set a franchise record for single-game completion percentage at 88.5%, finishing with more than 270 passing yards for just the second time this season: “You feel it in your mechanics sometimes — at least I do… I’ve been working really hard over the last couple weeks trying to get back into that feeling.”
Rookie cornerback Maxwell Hairston made his home debut memorable by intercepting Mahomes late in the fourth quarter while covering Xavier Worthy tightly throughout much of the game. Hairston described living out his childhood dream: “Games like this are the games that I prayed for growing up… And the fact that I was a part of this game tonight man was truly like a dream come true.”
Hairston explained how preparation paid off during critical moments by disguising coverage looks before making key plays downfield: “It’s a zone where we kind of make it look like man and then kind of fall back… Just trusting what I see, being at the right spot doing my 1/11th and the ball found me.” McDermott commended Hairston’s poise under pressure: “It’s only his second game in the NFL, this is a pretty big introduction to the NFL when you’re in this type of game, so really proud of him.”
