The Buffalo Bills return from their bye week to face the Carolina Panthers in a Week 8 road game, marking their third 1:00 p.m. contest this season.

Buffalo has maintained a perfect record after bye weeks since Sean McDermott became head coach in 2017, going 8-0 in those games. The team has averaged 27.5 points and 352.1 total yards per game while allowing just 17.6 points on defense during that stretch. Quarterback Josh Allen is also undefeated after byes, with a personal record of 7-0 and 16 total touchdowns in such games.

McDermott discussed his approach to the week off: “I also want to kind of look under the hood a little bit more and making sure that we’ve got everything underneath in terms of the foundation that it’s helping us, from the way we practice, to the way we meet, to what we emphasize, to what we’re asking our players to do.” He added, “We’ll be consistent. That’s how I am. I think that’s the best way to approach things. And when you’ve been through it now a number of years, you kind of know where to look first. But yet every year is a little bit different too. It takes on its own personality. So, we’ll find those areas that are specific to this season, and make sure we try and spend due time where we need to spend as well.”

The Bills have lost their last two games but have not had three consecutive losses since Allen’s rookie season in 2018.

On the Panthers’ side, starting quarterback Bryce Young suffered an ankle injury in Week 7 against the Jets and is expected to miss Sunday’s game following an MRI that revealed a high ankle sprain. NFL Network analyst Tom Pelissero reported Young’s likely absence, with veteran Andy Dalton expected to start if Young cannot play. Panthers head coach Dave Canales commented on Young’s recovery: “We’re going to go day-to-day on that right now,” Canales said of Young’s injury. “And just really look at him each day, just test the ankle in different ways to see if we can get him back out there on Wednesday in some way, shape or form.”

Young has completed 61.6% of his passes for 1,288 yards with 12 touchdowns and five interceptions over seven games this season.

Dalton brings significant experience as a backup; he has played three games for Carolina this season and started six times over three seasons with the team.

For Buffalo’s defense, reinforcements arrive as defensive end Michael Hoecht and defensive tackle Larry Ogunjobi return from six-game suspensions. McDermott noted their importance given recent injuries along the defensive line: “It’ll be good to get these two guys back in the mix with the injuries that we have in particular,” he said.

Ogunjobi provides depth following injuries to other tackles including T.J. Sanders (knee), DaQuan Jones (calf), and DeWayne Carter (Achilles). Ogunjobi has started 108 games across eight seasons with notable stats including 27.5 sacks and 79 quarterback hits.

Hoecht adds versatility along the line with experience across four seasons.

Defensive coordinator Bobby Babich spoke about their return: “Two veteran players that bring a lot to the table,” Babich said. “And it’s a welcome addition anytime you can add talent, not only talent, but the intangible pieces that they could potentially bring.”

Offensively, Buffalo is seeking improvement after scoring below their early-season average for two consecutive weeks—20 points against New England and 14 versus Atlanta—despite ranking among league leaders with an average of 27.8 points per game (4th), most rushing yards per game (151), third most total yards per game (378.3), and fifth-best scoring rate (46.9%).

Offensive coordinator Joe Brady addressed these issues during the bye week: “There’s got to be a level of urgency,” Brady said of offensive improvement. “We’re not okay with how we’ve played… We’re going to figure it out because we’re going to dive into it.”

Head coach McDermott expressed confidence in Brady’s ability: “I remain confident, very confident in Joe and his ability to put us into the right situations and put our players in good positions on offense.”

Brady emphasized fundamentals as key: “I don’t look at it as what we’re doing offensively, like anything is broken… It’s too hard to win in the NFL when you beat yourselves and try to overcome that.” He added that maintaining both running and passing effectiveness remains important moving forward.

Sunday’s matchup will highlight top-performing running backs James Cook for Buffalo (537 rushing yards) and Rico Dowdle for Carolina (551 rushing yards). Statistically, Buffalo ranks ahead offensively while Carolina holds an edge defensively:

– Buffalo averages more points (27.8 vs Panthers’ 20.7) and total yards.
– Both teams are strong rushing teams; Buffalo leads all teams at 151 rushing yards per game.
– Defensively, Carolina allows fewer total yards per game than Buffalo but both are similarly ranked by red zone efficiency allowed.

These factors set up several matchups within Sunday’s contest between one of the league’s top offenses facing one of its better defenses.
