Senator Patrick M. Gallivan (R-C, Elma) is urging residents of New York to consider a career with the New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision (DOCCS). The department is currently facing staffing shortages, particularly in the Correction Officer position, due to attrition.

In a statement, Senator Gallivan highlighted the importance of working for DOCCS, stating, "Working for the Department of Corrections and Community Supervision is a challenging and rewarding career." He emphasized the crucial role that staff members play in providing services and supervision to incarcerated individuals, as well as ensuring security for residents, visitors, and the community.

The senator also pointed out that DOCCS offers opportunities for professional growth and advancement, making it an attractive option for individuals interested in various fields such as law enforcement, health services, civil litigation, education, food services, and trades.

Interested individuals can find employment information and apply online at the DOCCS website. The starting salary for a Correction Officer Trainee has recently been increased to $53,223, with the potential to advance to $56,158 upon completion of the probationary period. Additionally, employees can benefit from comprehensive health insurance, dental and vision care, as well as retirement benefits.

The call for applicants comes as DOCCS, like many correctional and law enforcement agencies nationwide, grapples with recruitment challenges that have led to operational difficulties and increased mandatory overtime.

For those looking for a fulfilling and impactful career in public service, a position within the Department of Corrections and Community Supervision may offer a compelling opportunity.
